No sound after new install Ubuntu 14.04

I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my Aspire E11 laptop. Everything works except sound. Nothing is muted. Alsamixer is in strange condition with no bars. Normally I find fixes by googling a question then finding then pasting commands into the terminal but all to no avail. I still have no sound. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Pulse audio controls show everything as normal with nothing muted.

This is the output forlspci -nnk | grep -i audio

$ lspci -nnk | grep -i audio

What does PulseAudio Volume Control show?

Hi James...

Welcome to the forum :)

In case you are unfamiliar with how to find out what 273 has suggested, open a terminal and type in and enter...

Code:

pavucontrol
If you get an error telling you something to the effect that it's not installed, the type in and enter...

Code:

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol
Or you can go to the Synaptic Package manager and see if "paprefs" is available. If so, you can download and install that. You can find a description of it here. :)

Also, using the terminal again, please post the output of...

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i audio
Thanks! :)

Try clicking on your Ubuntu Software Center icon in the task tray bar. After it opens, check the tabs to see what is already installed. There is a search pane at the top of each open window. I recommend installing VLC Media Player, Brasero (disk burning), Rhythmbox Music Player, and also Radio Tray (if you like a variety of streaming FM). I installed the above to get my audio and video up and running...Then I goofed up and L-O-S-T my Software Center. My Ubuntu 14 still works good but I can't install anything new other than downloading a .pdf like Linux Bible or Introduction to Linux. :o

I did look at PulseAudio Control and it shows eveything as normal 100 and not muted.

this was the output I got for the "lspci -nnk | grep -i audio" command.

$ lspci -nnk | grep -i audio

Hi...

Out of curiousity and I'm not sure it will tell us anything new, please also post the results of this command...

Code:

aplay -l
I'm wondering, on the off chance, if you have an HDMI component that alsa is trying to use as the default.

Regards...

james frankham 05-31-2015 11:05 AM

OK Thanks

Here is the readout for aplay -l

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Charliesrch 05-31-2015 02:03 PM

Thank you. I'll try it out and put it in my notes. I am just learning again myself with Linux. I re-installed Ubuntu 14 to get back my Software Center and now it's smooth sailing!!!

Hi...

From this and the results from "lspci -nnk," I would conclude, at this point, that either Ubuntu does not have a driver for this chip, or that the driver is not loading correctly, or that there may be an issue with the chip itself. From the page here, and here, it appears your device is a "vendor: 8086 ("Intel Corporation"), device: 0f04 ("Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series High Definition Audio Controller") and that support (I'm guessing) was added in the 3.16 or 3.19 kernel. You could find out yours in the terminal by using...

Code:

uname -r
Can I bug you for more outputs?

Code:

lsmod
Code:

dmesg
dmesg is, most likely, going to be a long one but please post all of it.

I also found a somewhat related forum thread from Tinycore, with a link at the bottom to this page, although I don't know if it would work in your case or what your model numbers are.

Regards...

Excellent! If you haven't already, please mark your other thread concerning this as "SOLVED." :)

Here are outputs you asked for, I am having posting because things are mixed up here

Hi...

Thank you for your patience in all of this but I'm afraid that, from what I've seen here and here, there doesn't seem to be support within the snd_hda_intel module (although it seems to be loading correctly) for your particular sound chip, at least in Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10. This is my "educated guess" as to why you don't have sound. ;)

My suggestion, apart from using Windows again, would to be try different distributions and see if you find any that supports your chip. You can also try Ubuntu 15.04 but I'm not sure if it will offer support, either.

However, if you want to stay with Ubuntu, there is also this option. Just get yourself a set of headphones or speakers. :)

I know these suggestions are not the ideal, unfortunately Linux doesn't have the range of hardware support as Windows, for a variety of reasons. Please let us know how this works out. :)

Regards...

Hi James. It might be helpful if you could run the alsa-info.sh script as described here

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo

It will upload the generated output to the alsa-project server. Post the link that it generates here so that we can review it. This should give us a fuller picture about your audio system and may help shed light on the cause of the problem.

Hello again. This is the readout from the alsa diagnostic thing, I hope it helps. Here I tell you that once I did have sound running on this computer with ubuntu 14.04 but one day it just stopped. I googled various solutions but none worked so I went for a fresh install
which as you know makes not a whisper, not the internal speakers or the head phones. It did work once so I know it can again.

This is the link, below is the output. http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=46...131744f6e6e5c5

Thanks ever so much for your patience and work.

Hi...

I wish I would have thought to ask this as now I don't know what could be causing the problem, unless it was an update or some other kind of software install or uninstall. Please disregard my previous post. :(

Thanks again, this is the link to the alsa info.

I would also like you to know that once I had sound running on this computer with Ubuntu 14.04 installed but then it stopped.
After many attempts to get it going again, googling for answers I gave up and re installed Ubuntu. So I know it can all work.
Head phones don't work also.

Some observations:

I note that power_save_controller is enabled and power_save (timeout) is set to 1 second
Code:

        power_save : 1
        power_save_controller : Y

There is an issue with 'Invalid AFG subtree'....
Code:

!!HDA-Intel Codec information
!!---------------------------
--startcollapse--

Codec: Intel Valleyview2 HDMI
Address: 2
AFG Function Id: 0x1 (unsol 0)
Vendor Id: 0x80862882
Subsystem Id: 0x10250860
Revision Id: 0x100000
No Modem Function Group found
Default PCM:
N/A
Default Amp-In caps: N/A
Default Amp-Out caps: N/A
State of AFG node 0x01:
  Power: setting=UNKNOWN, actual=UNKNOWN, Error, Clock-stop-OK, Setting-reset
Invalid AFG subtree
--endcollapse--

whereas it should look more like
Code:

State of AFG node 0x01:
  Power states:  D0 D3
  Power: setting=D0, actual=D0

I'm not sure what the cause of this is, and it might take a bug report to help resolve, but FWIW I did find a similar report concerning users with similar 'Intel Valleyview2 HDMI' audio hardware. In their case it seemed to involve an HDMI monitor in use as well.

More research needed...

OK here is Alsa link info. I hope it helps.

I give up, I posted the link for the alsa info and you gave me a reply which has disappeared.

Your reply sent me to a link of a user with a similar problem.

I was trying his messy work around and pasted the command in the terminal.

The computer re started but then will not accept my pass word so basically I'm locked out and don’t know how to get back again.

james frankham 06-02-2015 03:04 PM

In my ignorence I pasted su - root -c "startxfce4" in the teminal.

I'm a computer idiot, I know.

Have you tried to install LMDE or Debian? If they fail then it's likely there's not much change of getting your sound working on a Debian based system, for now at least, so it's worth looking at the likes of Fedora. If LMDE or Debian does work then it's possibly a good excuse to get used to them rather than Ubuntu.

ferrari 06-02-2015 04:18 PM

The output looks better - the audio card is powered up now. I'm still concerned by the kernel output reported, but I'm at the limits of my knowledge here, and don't really understand the significance of these
Code:

[ 1934.892372] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x205f0100
[ 1935.901168] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: No response from codec, disabling MSI: last cmd=0x205f0100
[ 1936.909981] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode: last cmd=0x205f0100

Does 'pavucontrol' provide now more options for setting configuration profiles and input/output devices?

Run these tests (any sound produced)?
Code:

speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
* CTRL-C to stop
Code:

speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
Are you able to plug in an HDMI monitor (eg TV with speakers) to test if you can at least get HDMI sound working?

I thank you for all your work, it's complicated sometimes but I believe in Linux so will experiment some more. As of now have managed to lock myself from all my files. I won't lose much and your Fedora suggestion sounds interesting and new.

james frankham 06-02-2015 07:21 PM

I am living on a boat far away, I don't have TV

Hi...

No, you're not. No one starts out knowing a lot about something, including Linux. When I first started using Linux (Ubuntu 5.10) as my primary (or rather sole) OS almost ten years ago, I had a such a difficult time with the learning curve and ironing out the bugs that five months later I went back to Windows XP. A few years after that, I gave Linux another try and was impressed with how much it had matured. In 2012, I made Ubuntu 10.04 my sole OS again until February of this year when my hard drive went out. I now use Lubuntu 14.04 and Windows Vista both as I acquired a second system. :)

Throughout those years, I learned more and more about Linux. It just takes time so don't be hard on yourself. ;)

Let us know how Fedora or another distribution works out, if you decide to go that route.

Regards...

@ardvark: about the output you originally requested:
Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i audio
first you ask lspci to tell us about kernel drivers (with -k), but the grep command displays only the lines containing "audio" or "Audio" or "AUDIO", and no subsequent lines (with additional info, such as which kernel driver is in use, if any).

if you want to find out about kernel drivers, you need to use something like this:
Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA5 audio
from "man grep":
Code:

-A NUM, --after-context=NUM
Print NUM lines of trailing context after matching lines.

i guess it's moot now, but that command never told us if there's a kernel driver in use for that device.

Hi ondoho...

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to fire up my laptop, I'm curious to see the results from both commands.... :)

Regards...

ardvark71 06-08-2015 02:37 PM

Sure enough...

Code:

aaron@aaron:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 03)
aaron@aaron:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA5 audio
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 03)
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Pavilion dv6700 [103c:30cc]
        Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
00:1c.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 1 [8086:283f] (rev 03)
        Kernel driver in use: pcieport
00:1c.1 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 2 [8086:2841] (rev 03)

Thanks for letting me know. :)

Regards...

ferrari 06-08-2015 03:19 PM

That driver information was contained was contained in the diagnostic output that I requested and you posted already, along with the actual loaded options. :)

james frankham 06-08-2015 11:43 PM

Has anybody came up with anything new, I installed Ubuntu 14.04 again but still did not get sound.

ferrari 06-09-2015 12:30 AM

I think you'll need to submit a bug report for this.

james frankham 06-09-2015 11:10 AM

Where do I file bug reports.

ferrari 06-09-2015 05:32 PM

You could report via Launchpad

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

or upstream perhaps

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/

Abigail1509 06-10-2015 01:36 PM

Thanks a lot!

james frankham 06-10-2015 10:18 PM

I'll do that.
