No Sound after first few days of using Linux

Hi Guys (and girls) , Well finally got fed up of Windows trying to control me and opted for Puppy Linux. Everything was fine for a week or so and then the sound stopped working, tried all I can think of with my limited knowledge.
This is where it stops for me!

sh-4.1# alsamixer
cannot open mixer: Input/output error

Any suggestions, not as sharp as I once was but I'd figured out the mixer would not open but what is the meaning of the I/O error.

What happens after a reboot?

Also, try running the command lspci (list pci devices) from a terminal; that should report the type of sound card you have. Post the output here. (Please use the "Go Advanced" button below when you do and surround the output with "code" tags; it makes it easier to read.)

I think this is the line you are looking for:

00:0f.0 Audio device: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Azalia Audio Controller

After a reboot nothing happens except no speaker icon in tray and no sound, was working fine before. also have booted with a Knoppix disc and the sound card works fine.It seems like a software problem with ALSA to me, corrupted file or something maybe!. Selecting ALSA in menu results in it flashing momentarily and disappearing.
Is it possible to reinstall the ALSA mixer to see if that clears the problem.
Thanks for the reply Frank.

Try running alsactl as root in a terminal.

If that successfully finds and sets up the card, run alsactl store to save the settings.

See man alsactl for more.

No success with that Frank, here is some output from ALSA"

sh-4.1# aplay -c 1 -t raw -r 22050 -f mu_law foobar
ALSA lib confmisc.c:674:(snd_determine_driver) could not open control for card 0
ALSA lib conf.c:3326:(snd_config_hooks_call) function snd_config_hook_load_for_all_cards returned error: Input/output error
ALSA lib confmisc.c:674:(snd_determine_driver) could not open control for card 0
ALSA lib conf.c:4184:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: Input/output error
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:4184:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: Input/output error
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:4184:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: Input/output error
ALSA lib conf.c:4663:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: Input/output error
ALSA lib pcm.c:2212:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.default
aplay: main:608: audio open error: Input/output error
sh-4.1#

If I rename the lupsave2 file and reboot it works fine so has to be some other software playing it up!.
Oh the delights of computing. Might give up and try Mint for a while.

I'm sorry, I'm fresh out if ideas. Trying another distro might be a good thing, even if just from a Live CD; if another distro works, that narrows it down to something Puppy-related.

I have a similar with Puppy Linux. If I boot up off of CD without having a save file on Hard drive I have sound. If I run ALSA sound wizard I can restore sound I then save it. If and when I reboot and have a save file the sound is gone again.

There is something not being read at boot-up or something is saved wrong when saved in my case. Maybe similar in your case. F.G.

Yep, that's the way it is,I deleted the save file and it's ok except it won't boot now without the disc. Still beats the crap out of Windows though, Puppy is my favourite with Knoppix a close second.
