no sound

I'm having some troubles with my soundcard in Debian. When using some command line program (for example mpg321), audio files seems to play correctly but I don't get any sound from my speakers. Is there somewhere some mixer, where one can adjust volume?

The second problem is that in X I cannot use sound at all. Currently I'm running KDE and when I try to change the audio device (for example from esd to ALSA) I just get different errors. Also none of the programs can play sound, but gives some error message about not succeeding to find/use audio driver.

In /dev/sndstat I have this:

Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.10rc3 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux host121 2.6.15-1-686 #1 Wed Jan 18 15:04:35 UTC 2006 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
VIA 82C686A/B rev20 with CS4299 at 0xb800, irq 5

Audio devices:
0: VIA 82C686A/B rev20 (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: Cirrus Logic CS4299 rev 4

Hi,

First make sure you have everything installed.

Do a:
Code:
apt-get install alsa-base
Code:
apt-get install alsa-oss
Then configure your soundcard:
Code:
alsaconf
To adjust/test it type:
Code:
alsamixer

Let's hear what happens?

Sincerely, Jørgen

What happens is that now the sounds work

Only problem is that KDE (aRTs?) won't play any sounds ('/dev/dsp is in use'). After turning off KDE sound server, sounds work. Is there any reason to use aRTs?

Also the microphone doesn't work: the sound level always returns to 0 after I've set it to 100 from alsamixer.

Anyway, now atleast I can hear some music.
Thank you very much
