Question No sound; Toshiba P100-217 runing Ubuntu 8.10 OS

Hi all.

Newbie, so please be gentle

Im running Ubuntu 8.10 on my Toshiba Satellite P100-217, and cant seem to get any sound.
I've gone to sound preferences and tried every variation, but still no sound.
Ps: I've noticed members referring to terminals and codes. I have no idea what either of this means So in replies, please keep this in mind.
