no screens found

I am a complete newbie to linux. I installed it on my laptop, a Dell Latitude C600. Whenever it loads, I get a message from Xfree86 saying that no screens were found, after the screen blinks a few times. It says my horizontal and vertical sync are 0. During the install it couldn't probe to find my monitor. I've got an ATI Mobility M3 video card. I'm trying to use RH9. I have 0 experience with linux, so please be kind.

Xris, give this a go: http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Form...leaseID=R24653

You likely should back up your XF86Config before installing this, might not be a bad idea to make a copy of your entire /etc/X11 directory, just in case. ;)

I haven't tried this, but I used to work for Dell, so I knew where to look. ;)

Best of luck,

Booster

Hi

Login as root through one of the terminals (Ctrl-Alt-F1) at the prompt type redhat-config-xfree86 which will help you to configure your X again. Try a diffrent monitor type or option that says genric and try using some of those. Also in the begining try to set your resolution a little lower and work your way up.

Last but not least try going to RH site and see if VGA card and monitor supported by RH: http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/

Good Luck

To fix your screen problem, take a look at this thread.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=92073

When you get to the point where you need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config in the monitor section, you can try the following:
Code:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier  "Monitor0"
        VendorName  "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName    "Dell 1024x768 Laptop Display Panel"
        DisplaySize  320        240
        HorizSync    31.5 - 48.5
        VertRefresh  59.0 - 75.0
        Option      "dpms"
EndSection

Note: This may or may not work. I don't guaranteed anything.

XF86Config

I changed XF86Config to http://ingo.exphysik.uni-leipzig.de/...86Config-4.txt

Still, it doesn't work
When it tries to load is says (EE) R128(0): No valid modes found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found

My head's starting to hurt . . .

Installing drivers

How do you install a driver from a floppy disk?

Mathieu 09-16-2003 10:00 PM

Is it a RPM or tarball (.tar.gz) ?

If it is RPM, you would mount the floppy (/mnt/floppy) and type:
Code:

rpm -ivh /mnt/floppy/driver_name
