no screens found
i stumbled upon this area (for the above subject) by way of google. I notice that may people here show output from log files and stuff to help troubleshoot, but I'm a total n00b here. I wouldnt know where to start to get these things to show.

Ok, just a few questions then to narrow this puppy down: What distro are you using? What video card do you use? What are the specs (even just a model and brand) of your monitor? What have you tried, if anything, yet? And the log file is usually: /var/log/XFree86.0.log For X errors, which this is. Cool |

Ok, you'll want to login as root, then type:

You say that you've been at it for 7 hours, and got nowhere, well I've been "pissing in the wind" for the better part of 2 years. Fortunately, thanks to the likes of MasterC, and quite a few others here at LQ, at least I have a working system. 7 hours down, and a couple of lifetimes too go - the stress can only get worse :D but with "good old hindsight" it DOES become more tolerable and ney, even enjoyable :D Welcome, good luck and enjoy regards John |

yes it's been a long day, actually a long nite too cause i didnt goto bed lastnite (that was spent wiping the drives and installing windows). my typing is a little slow cause my fingers wont line up with the home keys, i've gone thru a box of lil debbie snack cakes and a pack of smokes, but for some sick reason i stick with it. This is the first time i've gotten some feedback that I think may actually work (my regular forum sort of let me down and I find LQ). I'm waiting to hear back from Master and i'll do yet another reboot and try the next thing :-) |

woooo hoooo!!! Now I feel so liberated!! haha. now if i can get it online. I've set the network settings similar to my windows setting (static ip) but when i bring up a page it immediately says the page cannot be found. Now i'm a little bit happier :-)
any quick suggestions? oh, and the redhat-config-xfree86 command is what did the trick. |

IP's.
nameserver 1.2.3.4 nameserver 2.4.2.1 And so on, but not those numbers, instead actual IP's from your ISP for their DNS servers. Cool |
forgot about this thread. I actually used my gateway ip to the router as the nameserver :-P

Sometimes that works too (depending on the router and how the info gets dispersed). :)
