Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I can play (and listen to) my mp3s (with "xmms"),
but no midi files :
In fact, "playmidi" won't play a file (to send back to "denemo") for the following reason :
-> no playback device found.
1) MAKEDEV -v midi00
-> create midi00 c 14 2 root: audio 660
-> MAKEDEV : error making /dev/midi00 : operation not permitted
2) I can see a "/dev/midi00-" appearing
3) I tryed it again but as you can imagine, no incredible thing happened :
MAKEDEV -v midi00
-> create midi00 c 14 2 root : audio 660
-> MAKEDEV : error making /dev/midi00 : file exists
an other idea ?
some soundcards, especially onboard soundcards don't support midi. So you find all devices in /dev and ALSA was configured right, but ALSA don't work with midi and you see (on console) the message "playback device not found"
Now I have installed the programm timidity + timidity-patches in Debian Woody and all midi's are sounds well. For info: timidity convert midi to wave and play it.
