Unhappy No permissions


I am using suse 9 and am trying to install my usb modem

i have to run the directory from the root file but apparently i dont have permission to move things to there

I have seen a previous post which mention a console

what is it and where is it??

The console is also known as the terminal. I am working from memory here (I have had to temporarily remove Linux) but if you click the 'start' button it is (I think) found under the System menu.
