No mouse pointer in Mint 17

No mouse pointer on loading Mint 17 onto new build computer: Asus A88XM-A mobo, AMD A6 7400K CPU, 4gb Corair xms3 memory, seagate hard drive, optical drive. Have updated bios to latest version from Asus web page. Mouse works ok in bios pages so believe mouse is ok.

Any ideas please?

Hi,
what kind of mouse do you have? Did the mouse work during the installation of the system?
I would start by checking the output of lsusb (assuming it is a USB mouse) to see whether it is recognized, and also lsmod to see what (if any) driver it uses.

Thanks millgates, will try this, have problem with both usb and ps2 mice.

Hello Millgates,
lsusb recognises mouse ok in Tanglu ( have tried other distros, all loose mouse pointer on changing screen resolution but Tanglu reverts back to original resolution so don't have to reload). However if I use Mint 13 no problem change screen resolution still have a mouse pointer. so either use Mint13 or cannot change screen resolution! Allseems very strange. Have a disc for Ubuntu 6.06 could see what this does!

OK, but what about Mint 17? Does lsusb list your mouse in Mint17?

OK, so this only happens when you change the resolution of your screen? Before that it works normally? (In Mint 17)
Can you determine whether the mouse doesn't work OR the mouse works but the pointer is invisible?

Try booting from a live CD? Maybe your distro didn't install properly. Was it recently purchased?

Hello millgates,
Yes mouse pointer not visible on changing screen resolution, but works ok before change resolution, answer seems to be not to change resolution! Have just tried Ubuntu gnome desktop - i385 and this will let me change screen resolution without loosing mouse pointer visibility. When do loose visibility and move mouse around some parts of screen react so mouse is ok. Am now using Mint 13 which works ok as not too keen on Unity.

In that case it may be an issue with either the X-Server or the graphics driver. What graphic card does your computer have and what driver are you using?

Display Driver

Changing the display driver fixed this for me. Just head into Settings panel to find display-manager. If you cant get into it because of no mouse pointer.... Press alt-f2 to bring up the enter command box and type driver-manager. Click enter and then select one of the drivers relevant to your card. My AMD Radeon card didn't take to well to the xserver wrapper..... so I went with the fglrx driver and all is good after a restart.

Hope this has helped.
