No monitor in X and no SSH

let me start off by saying i'm a big time linux newbie.

I'm running Redhat 9.0 on my server.

I had SSH working fine. I could login to my server from my laptop (win xp). I tried again last night and i get this error "too many authentication failures for haggertus"

if i actually go to my server and try to login as haggertus it works fine. I've also tried to SSH to my server and login as root, that won't work either. i can login as root sitting at my server though.

also, when i'm at my server and i type startx, my monitor goes into sleep mode. the machine sounds like it's thinking and starting everything up, but i don't see anything. if i hit ctrl-alt-del and hit enter it will wake the monitor up and bring me back the the shell.

i've been googling around and can't find how to fix these problems. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't know about the remote login, or the ssh problem, but have you ever gotten X to run on this server?? Try running
/usr/X11/bin/xf86config and input the correct parameters to set up x correctly. DON'T GUESS AT THIS STUFF, be sure you know what video card you have and what your monitor is capable of before you start..... if in doubt on the monitor, look it up at the manufacturer's website prior to attempting something that will fry your equipment. On the video card portion, if you can't find your exact card, find one with the same chipset at the very least, that's what I have to do. Beyond that, choose resoloutions that you are comfortable looking at, and when it's all done, choose "y" to write a new config file. startx should work from there.... Also, you might want to run wmconfig (as root) to choose your default window manager (gnome, kde etc)

Luck

ok i figured out the ssh problem i was having. i only get locked out from using ssh when i run usermod on a user. after running usermod, that user can no longer ssh to my server.

any idea why?
