no make menuconfig in kernel-2.6.6???

Please help...

I have never compiled a new kernel before. However it seems clear to me that I after downloading and uncompressing files into /usr/src/linux-2.6.6 that as root I should run

make menuconfig

which returns
make: *** No rule to make target `menuconfig'. Stop.

which doesn't really surprise me because there is only arch and drivers dir's in the
linux-2.6.6 directory.

my question is... did I somehow download the incorrect files or am I supposed to do something first? Or excecute the make menuconfig from a different directory?

I am a little confused about the lack of ./configure script???

Please help

I am new to Linux as well and I have just installed Mandrake 10.0 Official just a couple of hours ago. I have learned that to be able to activate some features of my laptop (AMD PowerNow!, 3D acceleration, etc.) I have to patch my kernel, etc. which I don't really now much about.

I was able to apply the patches to the kernel 2.6.6 source so far. But when I try to configure the kernel by using

make O=/home/name/build/kernel menuconfig

I get an error message saying:

make: *** No rule to make target 'menuconfig". Stop.

I downloaded the kernel source again but again I got the same error message.

I will realy appreciate your helps, thanks...

These are the all the files/folders that I have in my kernel 2.6.6 source.

arch/, crypto/, fs/, ipc/, MAINTAINERS, net/, scripts/, usr/ COPYING, Documentation/, include/, kernel/, Makefile, README, security/, CREDITS, drivers/, init/, lib/, mm/, REPORTING-BUGS sound/

The Makefile I am pretty sure is the one that creates the menuconfig. I am not exactly a guru on linux, but I think that is what you need.
Check that you are root and that you have permission to access all the files (although i don't see how you wouldn't as root). and try again.

Check you have all these files and then try again. check the md5sum of the file against the expected value if the download site provides it.
from shell:
md5sum filename

hope that helps
