no LILO, no GRUB, NO BOOT !!!
 

Hello,
I've installed Slackware from floppy on hd but I can't boot on it... I haven't LILO or GRUB because I can't even compile them. . . as gcc is installed on the Hard drive version which can only be mounted but not Booted.


When I start, it writes "Missing operating system"...
Please, help

I'm not sure I understand the situation here. What exactly do you mean by 'installing from floppy'. Could you describe the process in a bit more detail?

Usually if you have installed onto HD you get the option to install LILO or GRUB at some point in the process, or at least make a boot floppy.

If you really have Slackware on the HD you should be able to boot it from the floppy by saying something like 'root=/dev/hda1' (or whatever it is) at the 'boot:' prompt. Sorry, I'm a bit rusty on booting from floppies.

Well, actually, the distro I downloaded fills two floppies and can be loaded directly to RAM (a bit like knoppix).

There is a process that permit to install it on hd . . . all in command line,
- First, it needs two partitions, a dos native and a linux native
-Second, it needs some files from the Slakware mirror to the dos partition
-then we have to mount the dos part in /cd and the Linux part in /hd. . .

it copies the files, ask to reboot, and.... nothing.

the only way way to access to the partion and to these files is to reload the virtual Linux in RAM from the floppies and to mount /hd

That sounds very unusual to me. Is this one of the standard ways to install Slackware? If so you could try the Slackware forum where the traffic is lower and someone is more likely to notice your message. Sorry I can't offer any specific advice.

why not use your install floppy, boot into your linux partition and mkbootdisk
