Question No Internet

I bough a new HP 530 Notebook which came with free-dos. I am using this computer at home with a dsl connection from arcor.

I wiped the harddisc clean an installed Suse 10.1---- no internet
I installed Suse 10.3---- no internet

Out of desparation I even tried installing Widows XP--- no Internt

With all three systems everything works, just no internet connection.
All I do is unplug the cable that is in the computer I am using now, where it works fine, and plug it into the new computer--- no internet

With windows XP it does tell me the driver for the network adapter is installed and functioning. Plus, it also tells me that a driver for a networkcontroller is missing...

Anybody have any idea what is, and where I can get one????

Thank you all for trying to help....

Question HP's support website?

I don't claim to be an expert on these matters by a long shot but I was just wondering if you had tried any of these yet?

You need to install the right drivers for your nic-card, for win-xp you can get the drivers and specifications for your system at the HP web site.

I've done some looking around and the Intel 82562GT chip set your notebook has is problematic. Take a look at this posting Here I did some Googling and haven't seen any real solutions for linux. Maybe someone else on this site will have a better answer for ya. The driver for win-xp should work, but you may want to look into flashing the bios also.

No success

Hello Mr Rangerman,

thank you for your help.
But I still get the same result... no internet.
I have of course downloaded all the drivers from the HP website.
I have no W-LAN, only a cable to be plugged in. But at HPs advice I installed all the W_Lan Drivers and I picked up two networks in the neighbourhood. Without a password, I could not find out if that would have worked properly.
Because anyway the problem is not getting some kind of a connection, I do get one over my cable too. Only I also get the notice, that the connection is insufficient and I may not be able to acces the internet properly...
Which I am afraid is exactly what happens...

How can I find out which chipset is installed in my HP 530? I found two possibilities, the 940 GME and the 945 GME. Can there be a differenz in the drivers for those?

Thanks, Upageya

Open up a terminal window and issue the command "lspci" (no quotes, and you will need to become root to do it). If you read the results, it should tell you what kind of Ethernet chipset you have. UYou should Google for it or ask here to figure out what the right driver is. Once you install it successfully you should be able to issue "ifconfig -a" and see the Ethernet device as eth0 (it might not be a bad idea to issue that command right away -- if eth0 already exists it means that your Ethernet card is detected, so there must be some other problem -- post back here in that case).

installation, internetconnection
