No inittab file found

Hi

I have been running Fedora Core 3 happily for a couple of weeks now but tonight when I went to use the computer it had frozen - nothing worked, mouse, keyboard, nothing.

So I powered off and then on again and now after the first few startup lines I get the following message:

INIT: no inittab file found

Enter runlevel:

Regardless of what number I enter for the runlevel I get the following response:

INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

and then nothing more.

As I have FC4 on CD's I booted to disk 1 and tried 'linux updates' but only got an abnormal temination. I tried this as going through the normal installation procedure with FC4 I was given no chance to 'upgrade' but only to make a clean installation - unless I am missing some (not so) obvious step.

Any suggestions (politely) as to what I can do now?

Regards

John

No, the last thing I was doing yesterday was to install Nvu, and, of course, I do not have a boot disk (cries of 'shame' I hear!)

what is NVU???

vimal 07-22-2005 06:20 AM

first of all boot of ur initial installation disk. then chroot to /mnt/sysimage. after that issue the command "rpm -qf /etc/inittab". this would give u which rpm installed the file. u must have a file server (ftp or nfs) or a second cd drive. mount this source to another location such as /mnt/cdrom or something like that. now install the rpm. this would install the file and u make the wanted changes in it. now exit twice from the prompt. this wud restart the sysytem. i hope this wud work...... i always have wondered what i wud do if i wud have such a situation...........................................vimal feel free to ask more.........

Nvu is a web authoring package.
