No init found!

Terrible things have happened...
I was installing Ubuntu 10.04 to an external hdd. Then I tried to log on to my computer about a week later and it said "no init found. Try Passing init=bootarg" So i typed in /.init and it started to start. Got to the screen to where it has the ubuntu with timed dots below it. But it froze there.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Let me know if I can supply any more info!

"I was installing..."

Did you finish installing? Were you able to log into the box after the installation completed? One of my first thoughts is a failing drive; can you mount the drive on another box? External drives are great for testing in that regard.
