no gui :(

I install mandrake 10.1 and all the cds go through and configure it all and all that then mandreak boots up... I get a GUI with a mouse and the mandrake background... nothing else should their be anything else on the screen or is that all im gonna get?

The first thing you should see is either a grapical or text based logon prompt, where you can enter your user name and password. Do you see anything that looks like that?

when I push alt cntrl and F1 I get a prompt that asks to login so I login as root and my friend told me to type xf86config so I tried that and I still get no gui

when I do startx it just comes up with a gui with nothing... but I fixed it their was something wrong with my configuration, thanks for your help guys yeah they give you warning when you login as root then type startx

If you got a gui with nothing, you didn't install a default window manager, or the window manager's graphical login tools, such as KDM or GDM.
