Pgplot software : pgplot-5.2 . Upper case is e.g. PGPLOT-2.21 (PGPLOT.pm),
... which uses "perl graphics" ..
http://search.cpan.org/ > > http://search.cpan.org/search?query=PGPLOT&mode=all
> http://search.cpan.org/~kgb/PGPLOT-2.21/PGPLOT.pm

perl-PDL → perl-PDL-Graphics-PLplot
http://search.cpan.org/~chm/PDL-2.4....PLOT/PGPLOT.pm

Also graphics : tcl-pgplot. ( libtkpgplot.so.5 ).

I don't know how to specify a graphics in a command using libcpgplot.so.5 directly.
( Font ? /usr/share/pgplot/grfont.dat ? ).
Which command did you use ? May be the tcl library or a perl module must be used ?
(( Perl PGPLOT-2.21 test.pl text:
.... $dev = "/XSERVE" ... ... $ENV{PGPLOT_XW_WIDTH}=0.3; ... ))

Google keywords, suggest :
pgplot special characters, pgplot specify, pgplot specify graphics

I.e. some more information would be nice, if you want an answer.
Like the <name>, <version> of your Linux OS.
