no floppy, no CD, but has USB, can DSL or AntiX be installed?
 

I have old thinkpad 560Z (PII, 233MHx, 98MB RAM, 8GHD), no CD, lost external floppy, but has USB (bios does NOT allow for USB boot).

I want to install a "light distro", how can I install? (besides taking out the HD and using another laptop to install and putting it back).

I would appreciate the guru's help on this dilemma.

Do you have any os on the laptop?

Does it have a network port and can it net boot?

Yes, it barely boots up with windows98. I think my laptop has ethernet built in.

1. Connect my windows98 laptop to my router with ethernet cable.
2. my desktop running XP, put the DSL distro in the CD.
3. change my bios on my windows98 to startup via network (it does have net boot).

Will this allow for installation on the windows98, machine? Sounds possible, am I missing something here?

If you can boot off the network then you can do it, but it would not be for the faint hearted.

I'll dig you some links out but the way I would go about it is Boot over the network using your other box as the boot server. You may want to think about using some sort of Virtualisation Software(*cough* vmware *cough* on your desktop so that you can run a linux server which will help you a lot.

But before you start you may want to read this: http://home.comcast.net/~fbui/Linux-on-TP560z.html - This isn't something I would want to try, you could burn a lot of time and get no where fast.

thanks for the suggestion, since I have another laptop (more modern running linux), I may just swap HD, seems like the less painful way.
