no domain name?
is it possible to have my ip use a domain name even if i don't own one?
like in order to get to my apache server you have to http://my-ip i want it to be a domain and i don't have a credit card or any money for that matter do i NEED to purchase the domain name or can i make one up or is there a place i can get one for free?? |
Some services offer domains for free, it usually requires an appending with their domain name to yours though, so for example:
www.somethingcool.no-ip.org might be your domain. Check out: www.noip.com www.dyndns.org www.zoneedit.com www.changeip.com (.org?) For more info. Short of that, no you can't just "make up" one ;) There would really be no point in having registrars if that were true :) You can however, for your local LAN choose whatever you'd like, but realize that will only hold true in your local lan, and need to be setup in /etc/hosts or your DNS software locally to work. ya thats what i thought.. i just wanted to be 100% about it but thanx for that info i'll check it out! :)
