No direct rendering

I happen to need direct rendering for games but:
Quote:

vincent@vincent-desktop:~$ glxinfo|grep render
direct rendering: No
GLX_ATI_pixel_format_float, GLX_ATI_render_texture
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 AGP 1x TCL
I have been messing around with ATI drivers under Ubuntu 6.10 edgy eft and I don't know what's going on anymore. My hardware specs are in my signature.

EDIT: Can somebody help me getting direct rendering working?

Thanks in advance

Use the web site search feature. This topic has been covered many hundreds of times.

Covered, but never solved. I also don't want to use DRI because in the latest Phoronix comparision between DRI and the official ATi drivers there was up to 20fps boost in the official ATI drivers.

The only reasonable fix would be buying a nVidia card, but there must be a way to get this working because with Xandros I could play Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake 3 without a problem.
