i'm beginning to suspect that your thread title is misleading, and your problems do not stem from an upgrade and even the mysteriously disappearing cd rom drive is just a symptom of something bigger - hardware trouble?
My thoughts too.

Gentlemen: Your suspicions may be right. I acquired the external optical drive a while ago thinking that the internal drive might be faulty.
My HPCompaq6910p computer is ten years old and HP does not provide an updated bios. I bought it second hand and deleted the Windows XP and XP Pro that it came with. This does seem to have left some bios problems (slow to boot).

However so far there have been work-arounds for problems such as the wifi switch usually not working. I was hoping to find a solution for the cdrom.

Thank you all for your interest, help and insight.

There are a few CD drives that won't work with the 4.x kernel. The developers were going to add a workaround, but decided it was too much trouble.
