no connection to net

RH9 - firewall box- Internet connection disappeared - Internal net ok

I cannot get eth1 to connect to the net. When I ping there is no significant activity on the DSL modem.

I can ping internally to & from the Linux box using eth0.

I think the cards are ok - identical D-Link RTL8139's and "lsmod" shows 8139too. They checkout as ok on bootup.

An extra Nic showed up on the ipconfig as a "tulip" device and I have not tried to remove it yet --- contributing to problem?? It shows "fail" on bootup.

Network configurations are close to ISP's spec's but Subnet is off a bit and IP is also off by 1 number. Any changes I make when editing using Vi or ifconfig command line entries don't seem to "stick" .

I can bring the cards up & down ok

Any suggestions of what might be wrong??

Are You using DHCP?
What dou You mean `don't seem to "stick"`? Well, if You use ifconfig command it should "stick".
Try to send us You firewall rules and ifconfig command You used.

You should know that `Network configurations are close to ISP's spec's` is not enought ;-). You need to be precise ;-)

tulip is a module for a network card (I have one myself)

if modprobe tulip is failing try reinstalling it.

Thanks for the response

Re: dhcp & specs - the external net is static. The firewall box was setup by a security wiz who is now unavailable. The ISP says the connection will "probably" work being one number up on the ip. The subnet will not change at all, it is supposed to be 255.255.255.248 but after I change it reverts to 255.255.255.0 !??! Is it locked or broken??

One of the commands I used was a command line entry: ifconfig eth1 142.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask 255.255.255.248 "enter" then ifconfig eth1 broadcast 142.xxx.xxx.255

Firewall rules ...hmm... are they listable? This machine has a floppy only. Baaasic hdwr!!

Re: the tulip - I juggled the cards around and used a new D-Link when it appeared. If the modprobe tulip is failing how can I confirm and where could I find a replacement??
