no ./configure ???

hi all,
seems like i'm making progress in linux i've installed my first program from source it is mpg123 and it works fine. but i have a question:

i looked at LQ's compile program from source manual and it says that i have to run ./configure after i untared the archive and changed directory to newly created one:

# tar zxf filename.tar.gz
cd filename

the funny thing is that when i type ./configure console says no such file or directory/

am i missing any package?

thanks in advance

yes, with some programs you have to run before you can run configure.
and some you have to edit the Makefile yourself because the developer cannot be arsed writing configure scripts

usually ./configure would be the first step to install a binary from source, but it may have been packaged differently. First you have to CD into the folder where everything was dumped after you un-tar the then try ./configure if that don`t work open the folder where everthing was dumped and look inside of it there`s usually a readme or install.txt explaining how to install it.
