already tried that before, answering again:

bash: /usr/bin/curl: No such file or directory

I'm in admin account now so will look if i can find it there.
yup, i see it there, although i have to click on File System to get there (under My Computer)

already posted, in any case, out of desperation, started trying anything I could find and this solved it:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install curl

If you wish to install PHP-Curl on Ubuntu, use:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install php-curl

I guess I had done it previously in a wrong order or something. Or perhaps I did not do the second update before installing the php. works fine now.

thank you for your ideas! always learning with this new os but already like it more than the other two I had before, even if it is a bit quirky occasionally
