No audio on new build
 

I cannot get my sound to work on a new build with Mepis. Here are my specs and listings:
Motherboard: F1A75-V PRO
Mobo spec - Onboard audio chipset - Realtek ALC892

It appears that I have two sound systems. KMix seems to know about both, but nothing I have tried gets sound to work.
Q1 - Why would there be two sound systems on the mobo?
Q2 - How do I get sound to work?

Q1 There are several reasons you would have two sound devices, does the machine have an HDMI port, usb webcam, or some other similar device?

Q2 Have you tried alsaconf or unmuting and setting levels with a mixer to define and setup your audio device?

I have KMix and it sees both sound systems, but nothing I have tried gets sound. alsaconf is not in my repositories Mepis & Debian. Googling around I found this site which seems to speak about choosing the sound system to be master. http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/to...ault-speakers/
But I don't know enough to know if running the script he talks about would fix my problem. And I don't want to mess the system up by trying it out without someone telling me it wont bork the system and is easily undone if it doesn't work.
Also in googling for alsaconf, I found this site that also talks about setting up .asoundrc - http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Asoundrc
The only sound I get are system sounds, but that is probably the little tiny speaker on the motherboard.

Have you tried running alsaconf rather than looking for it in the repositories? There are more tips here.

I took a look at the script and you could run that if you wish. All it really does it creates a .asoundrc in your home directory. To undo it or reverse it you would just delete the .asoundrc from your home directory.

Peacedog - Thanks for looking at the script. I thought it looked OK to try, but don't know enough to say for sure. I'll also look a little further into KDE settings.

@ Peacedog and Topher_AL- 'Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Device 1714' is for the HDMI output. Its not actually a soundcard/chip, its just a controller.

You should be able to get sound working with alsaconf or by playing with the mixer settings.
