AC97 driver is supplied with most distros. Here is where the Alsa version on my system.

Code:

/lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/kernel/sound/pci/ac97 11:08:43 > ls
snd-ac97-codec.ko.gz

The path to the driver will be different on your system. Open a konsole, do a 'su' enter ( no quotes ) and enter your root password. Run the command 'updatedb' ( no quotes ). Wait for it to complete, and then do a 'locate snd-ac97*' ( no quotes ). If you have the driver, it will show up.

If not, your distro probably has it compiled for your kernel. Install it using your package manager.

Once installed, try to modprobe the driver. You need to have a mixer installed as well. Some distros have sound muted by default. Open the mixer and make sure you are not muted. Then you should be able to make some noise...

When I use the Locate command this is what comes up.
I dont know what to do at this point.

/usr/src/linux-2.6.20/sound/pci/ac97/.snd-ac97-codec.o.cmd
/usr/src/linux-2.6.20/sound/pci/ac97/snd-ac97-codec.o

Probably just need to un-mute a couple mixer settings, and mute some that are un-muted that should be muted.

Which Linux distribution?

My Debian Etch had no sound also, just had to issue a couple un-mute commands to get it up as there is apparently a bug in the version of alsa that came with it.

$ amixer set Master 100% unmute
$ amixer set PCM 100% unmute

I think I need whip and a chair!
I am using Lunar Linux 1.6.1
Kernal 2.6.20

I have explored my system and found the codec
when I use ./ or prg name on what I think starts the prg I get "Permission Denied"
I have looked in every dir and sub dir in my kernal, at this point I am very confused.

This distro once configured will be very user friendly and any noob will be able to use it out of the box.

At this point I don't know if you have the driver loaded or not. Would you open a konsole and use su to get root privledges, and run the command 'lsmod | grep snd' ( no quotes ) and post the results.

This will tell us if the driver is loaded. If it is not, then you need to try to use modprobe drivername to load the driver.

What program are you trying to start? Permission denied implies you are trying to start or access something the user you are logged in as does not have access to. If it a program like kmix, go to the directory of the program and do a 'ls -l kmix' to list the program, and show the permissions. Post it, and we'll go from there.

I installed ALSA but I can's seem to get to configuration.
Before I log in I see the ALSA mixer load at start up.

Lunardragon,

I spent some time looking through the documentation on www.lunarlinux.org and teh forums there.
This distro is quite different to anything I have used before. There are some tings I think you will need to look into.

I know you installed Alsa, did you install as well 'alsa-utils' and 'alsa-lib' packages? If not, you will need them to get alsa going.

I'm wondering if you would find better help on their web site? Just a thought... This distro is not what I would call 'main stream', not that I think that is bad, just things are installed differently, and that can lead to problems people without the experience in lunar linux may not understand immediately.

Is this your first leap into linux? If yes, you might be advised to pick an easier distro to install and configure. I would consider FC, Mandriva, or one of the flavours of Ubuntu easier. Once again, just a thought.

Alsa is installed, Alsa Utilities will not compile.
After extraction I get a folder with util files.
hmm is there another compiler?
