No ADSL in Fedora 3

I recently installed FC3 and it went well, but my internet is not working. I used adsl-setup to set up my ADSL account and then ran adsl-start. When I check adsl-status it tells me:

Link is down (can't read pppoe PID file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe)

I don't know what this means! I looked in /var/run and there is no file like that that I can see. Should there be? Does anyone know how to fix this? A computer without internet is pretty dull.

Thanks.

I'm assuming that you're using a USB modem? This is not much help, but when I got DSL, I didn't bother with the supplied USB modem. Bought a d-link ethernet modem for about £30. Was up and running in seconds. Not much help I know, but much easier.

I actually use a Linksys ADSL modem that I connect to with my on-board ethernet card which is eth0 in linux. It was working great with Fedora 1.

Right ok!! Is eth0 setup for DHCP? What does ifconfig -a give you?

Hello Scmcansh,

Why do you try to setup your modem, if it worked in FC-1 then it will work with FC-3.

If your modem is connected to eth0 then you only worry about the hardware setup / installation of your Ethernet interface (on-board).

99% of all ADSL modems that connect with Ethernet use a HTML setup.

For some more information about FC-3 and an Ethernet ADSL modem/router look at http://adsl.yoll.net/setting-up-adsl...-08-Linux.html

With kind regards

Richard

If your modem is plugged into your ethernet port then you shouldn't really need to use the adsl-* programs to connect, you should be able to SSH or telnet or whatever into your modem if your network card is setup properly and go from there. When you boot press F2 to get a detailed view and see what it says for init eht0 interface. If it fails or takes ages then you know there's a problem somewhere.

So I call my ISP and tell them my IP and that I have new hardware and they tell me that I have to register said new hardware. What a huge amount of time I wated for nothing. I hope this note helps someone else. If your IP starts with 10.****** call your ISP and get that hardware set up!

Thanks for the help.
