Why are you compiling and not using Synaptic or apt-get?

gcc isn't installed by default. I think in Ubuntu you would use
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
to install this.

I would say use a binary. Look for vlc.deb and download it and then install it. For some reasons I am wary of compiling vlc. But then it is just me :).
