nmbd won't start automatically

i have everything setup successfully, and samba works fluently... until i have to start the nmbd services each morning when i reach office in order to have the samba running.

i tried to check out the nmbd services by using this command:

nmblookup -B "servername" _ _SAMBA_ _

it returns me these messages:

querying _ on 192.168.0.2
name query failed to find name _
querying _SAMBA_ on 192.168.0.2
name query failed to find name _SAMBA_
querying _ on 192.168.0.2
name query failed to find name _

which from my knowledge, i believe it's not normal, which means it had problems.

FYI: 192.168.0.2 is my server's IP.

is there any solution for this?

thank's a lot., pals...

Is the nmb server running when you get in to work?
ps -ef | grep nmb

Can you also post the nmb log, that may show why it is crashing

"ps -ef | grep nmb" returns me nothing when i'm back to work every morning after i started the server & the samab the day before. but the weird thing is if i restarted the whole machine / server, the nmb will start automatically and the next morning when i do "ps -ef | grep nmb", it returns me nothing again, where it should reply me something like this: "root 1782 1 0 20:11 ? 00:00:00 nmbd -D".

and because i'm still a newbie, so i used a lot of GUI interface of the mandrake, and it hangs oftenly, can anybody tells me what's the problem and what should i do with it?

I reinstalled it (upgrade install) once, but it still hangs oftenly, do i really need to reformat everything and reinstalled it?

my hardware specs are:
PIII 1 GHz
SDRAM 512MB

please advise... thank's a lot..

I wouldn't start formatting just yet. Can you post a copy of smb.conf and a copy of your nmb and smb log files as well as any information during the overnight period that appears in /var/log/messages

What version of samba are you using? I see a few bug reports with the same issue:

i'm using 2.28 version...

i'm wondering whether the old version had the bug as well? as the bug that you showed me on the URL is for the 3.*.* version? and whether the fixes is applicable for the old version as well?

thank's a lot.

I'm not sure, you may want to try upgrading to the latest version of samba 3 since samba 2 is getting assed it's sell by date.
