nmbd dead but pid file exists

Whenever I go to Services and try to start up Samba, I get the message;

smbd (pid 4384) is running...
nmbd dead but pid file exists

I've successfully configured shorewall so that my 192.168.1.0 subnetwork of Win XP PCs can access the internet thorugh the linux box. Both smbd.pid and nmbd.pid appear in /var/run when smb is running.

Any ideas?

What if you remove the nmbd pid file?

When I stop smb in services, smbd.pid and nmbd.pid disappear from /var/run.

When I start smb up again, they reappear, and the same message "nmbd dead but pid file exists" comes up again.

I've tried deleting nmbd.pid while samba is running, but when I restart samba, I still get the same message
