NIC problem? Please help.
hello, linux newbie here....
uhhh... there's a problem during mandrake startup, i have the option to look at it's verbose startup.. during the check-up, the compputer i installed mandrake on managed to get "OK" for everything, except for "bringing up interface for eth0" which got "FAILED" incidentally, I coudnlt connect the mandrake to the net. mandrake itself detected the network card and managed to give it's chipset's name such as "VIA 10/100" or sth like that. so what's the problem? why couldnt connection be detected? the problem came across both terminals which i installed mandrake into. both terminals' specifications are not identaical. ------------------------------------ on another matter, how how do I look for my IP address or the mandrake machine? do i ask the administrator? and since other computers in the cluster are connected to the internet, is there anyway i can get the ip for the linux machine? in short, how do i look for: - IP address - netmask - gateway Thanks |

Code:
/sbin/ifconfig -a |
For the gateway run
/sbin/route Cheers, Tink |
look. problem solved.
i input the host name and the dns servers and voila, i managed to connect to the internet! yes!!!! HOWEVER  during boot up, during verbose check ups, they asked me to input a login name and password for THE HOST NETWORK eg. let's say i set the host to be 17campus.edu.my (not a real host btw), and during bootup, the asked me: 17thcampus login: password: after inputing the user login which i registered with mandrake and it's password, it gets back to command line with that $ symbol why did it not return to MANDRAKE? how do i return to mandrake? |
