NIC card and CD-Rom Problems

I just installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 on an old Gateway Solo 2000 laptop machine and I have encountered two problems. The first problem is that my PCMCIA card is not on the list of supported cards located in the /etc/pcmcia/config file. My questions on this are:

1. Can I just download the driver for my card and that will solve my network access problem?

2. If I download the driver, where do I install it to?

This leads to my last question. I can burn a copy of the driver from another computer but this Linux box will not access the CD-ROM drive. I went to mount the cd-rom but I get a message that say's "No medium detected" even though I have a cd-r in the machine.

3. How can I correct this error?

P.S. My kernel version is 2.4.7-10. Should I upgrade the kernel. If so, is there a good source that has instructions on how to perform the kernel upgrade?

Thanks in Advance

Try checking the website of the company that made your NIC (if it's a gateway NIC then check gateway) and your cdrom. Gateway will let you search by serial number on the laptop so you will know what cdrom you have.

How are you trying to mount the cdrom?
Is your cdrom drive old, and or covered with
dirt and smoke residue?
