NFS and portmapper problems

I have set up NFS once before, and I'm following the same steps as last time, but now its not working. I think my problem is with portmapper. On startup, it says that it is an unrecognized service, but when I type "/usr/sbin/rpcinfo -p" I get a list of services, and portmap is on there 9 times. Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks
