Nforce2 Drivers On fresh Redhat9 install

i know this subject has been touched a lot in and i have looked at most of threads but none have really been able to help me. I just stuffed up my recent install of redhat (ive wreked a number of installs trying to get the nforce driversworking) and i am getting ready to format and reinstall. I was just wondering could people give me some instructions on what to do to prepare for the nforce2 drivers. Such as upgrading kernel. When i install red hat 9 i start off with
uname -r
2.4.20-8

Should i be upgrading my kernel before trying to install the NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz

and if i should be what kernel should i be upgrading to.

once thats done, how exactly do i install the NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz.

thanks if you can help me. i really appreciate

by the way im using a a7n8x-x mobo with athlonxp 2800 barton

yes upgrade you kernel first.

use the automatic update that comes with RED HAT to get the latest kernel.

to install NVIDIA dirvers untar the file with

tar -zxf NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz

then read the instructions by typing

vi README or something like that.

NOTE: to exit the X11 type

init 3

in a command prompt.

to reenter X11 type

startx

righto thanks heaps. only problem is. i cant get kernel because for the nic is within the nforce drivers. its prob just easier for me to install an old realtek nic, that will definatly be detected from start up. i might do that. then the rest should be smooth sailing. thanks mate
