NEXT newb Q: Creating Live CD...

OK: I downloaded the CD image for the Mepis live CD (WHEW!), and I'm ready to burn/create a live CD. But I don't have anything like Roxio or such, so I'm wondering: If I simply burn the ISO file to a CD (using Windows XP's native CD/media burning program), will that work? Or is there some sort of special conversion that a CD burning program like Roxio will have to do to it?

Also, is there ANYTHING I have to look out for to avoid doing damage to my XP operating system or its files? Seems like I saw someone a few threads back mentioning that they used a live CD and it dismounted their Windows logical drive and they were having major trouble getting it to work again, or something like that (I'm pretty sure I got the details messed up, but you get the picture).
