Newbie Xconfigurator

Hi folks ,

Linux Newbie here

I insatalled RH 7.1 on an old pentium 60, installed fine but can't get xwindows ( GUI ) to work, Xconfigurator recognizes ATI mach 64 chip.

The screen just goes blank after running xconfigurator, it also goes blank after i edit the file by hand and use startx command. I also set monitor setting from monitor manual specs.

Any help would be appreciated !

THanks

Don

Not sure what the problem is, what type of monitor is it ? Also, pentium 60, as in 60mhz... that is gonna be kind of slow eh for X ?? I wouldn't ever put GUI on a 60mhz pentium, wouldn't be worth it I would think. How much RAM you have in this machine ?

indeed that system is more up for tinylinux or similar
I don't think it would appreciate rh 7.1

Hey, Thanks for the replys

The system only has 40 megs of ram ! Maybe that's the problem!

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll play with it in text mode for a while and then put the box into doorstop mode again ! :-)

Thanks Again

Don

40MB of RAM isn't tooo bad for X. I have a laptop here at work with 32MB of RAM running Slack 8.0 w/ KDE - just to do. The CPU is way faster that the one mentioned in the post - it's a Pentium 233.

If you don't already have a firewall or router, you can load a base Slack, Debian, or Gentoo distro and build a router or firewall. At least then it would be doing something other than keeping a door open and helping you stub your toe. :D

Another command you can use to shutdown... is poweroff (at least in RH 7.2 and RH 7.3)

justiceisblind: ? no offend but not only justice seem to be blind

jpweston: I'm not sure how can you do it. But I've tried rh7.2 on gateway laptop with c600MHz and 64Mb RAM and was no fun in Xwins

Probably had 2 windows open, I've seen that several times, not just from him. ha ha ha ha.

Don't try to load everything. That's the trick. Do a minimal install, maybe think about using sawfish or E, instead of KDE or Gnome. You should also do what jpweston said, at worst use it as a gateway/firewall.

Noerr,

A c600 w/ 64MB should be *ok* under X. It may be the fact that you were using a newer version of RedHat. It seems like I read something regarding 7.3 and there was a fairly hefty memory requirement - like 64MB is the bare minimum. 7.2 may be similar.

If you can play around, try using a leaner distro like the ones I listed for the firewall/router deal. Just select packages that you need.

BTW, the laptop in question is an IBM Thinkpad 770 w/ Pent.233 and 32MB RAM. KDE works ok, it just not very speedy.:D

uh...sorry...posted to the wrong subject before.... But to add to the discussion, I'm running RH 7.3 with KDE3 on a 250mhz Cyrix 366 chip. It isn't the fastest, but it still out performs Win98! (192mb of ram and a 4.3 gig hd)
