Newbie with hardware question
 

Hi there, this is my first post. My windows pc died a few days ago and I have decided to take this opportunity to go LINUX. I settled on getting a new system from a retailer with the following specs:

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor 5000+, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM; Windows Vista Home Premium, double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with LightScribe labeling, 360GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics and 15-in-1 media reader.

The following are the model numbers:

19" widescreen LCD
HP - Pavilion 5000+ Desktop a6200n
Hewlett-Packard - 19" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD Monitor w1907
Hewlett-Packard - Deskjet Multifunction Printer/ Copier/ Scanner F4180

I intend to push vista aside like the old prostitute it is (I apologize for the crassness) and install either KUBUNTU OR MEPIS. The system is SATA. My question is this: Will I encounter any compatibility issues? Any input/ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

As far as my limited knowledge is concerned, your hardware looks like it should be fine.

The only thing I've not encountered are SATA hard drives - if you searched for problems with them, you can almost guarantee to find someone who's experienced/experiencing problems with them.

I'd say just download Kubuntu (I understand that the best versions of Mepis cost something), md5sum the download to confirm that it's not corrupted and then burn and boot. The live desktop has the installer facility.

There might be one or two things worth checking out i.e. a sensible partitioning scheme (my preference is for /boot, /swap, /root and /home).

Check partitions out as it might be better not to make them all primary partitions. Then you could, as you learn more, just install other distro's to try out.

Dont worry about sata drives. Linux will detect them.

What I would do if I were you, download some different live-cds give them a try. What that will do is if you are going to have any hardware problems they will happen with the live-cd. Ubuntu's install cd is also a live-cd I think Mepis has a live-cd, also there is Knoppix.

As bottled leaf said SATA will not be a problem, the linux kernel sees them a scsi hd.

Thanks for all the input. I just don't want to spend all that money only to end up with win-dos on my system. I don't have a prob with it, but I really want something different and I know Linux will provide it. I just want this really bad. I love what Linux has to offer and I need to be part of it.
