Newbie Stuck in Slackware8!

Yes, I am a newbie and no its not slackware8's fault. Tryin to write working pppscript - dials out - connects to msn isp - i get
login:^M
% login: timeout expired!^M
alarm
Failed
Exit
All this is in my /var/log/messages
I startup at commandline ppp-go
what is next? I have no clue about connecting to the internet using commandline as root or in bash?
I can access wmaker as root, enlight w/gnome panel as usr1, and kde as usr2 but no devices setup and can't figure out what to do?
ds: no socket drivers loaded!
Last but not least if I am crazy enough to try and compile a system specific kernel - instructions only refer to loading up a new kernel in referrence to LILO. I use Loadlin for my dualboot half win98se and half slackware8 on 15gb maxtor.
So if I compile a new kernel - Do i have to start all over with the xf86, pppsetup and all?
I am sorry for all this but I have been struggling with man pages usr docs and linux users who can be so arrogant in chatroom for weeks. Like the only language in the world is machine language with programing syntax. Any support is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the space and time.

Are you sure that MSN uses script authentication and not PAP/CHAP/MS-CHAP? And if it does use script then write your script to look for 'ogin:' not 'Login:' as you don't know if you will be sent 'Login:' or 'login:' which are completely different as far as your script is concerned. Once you know which one it uses just run pppsetup again. It can be mean a bit of trial and error though!

HTH

MS-chap-80 is the option I chose during pppsetup but ppp uses pppd chat at some point which looks like a script, it was by manually manipulating pppscript using the most recent copy of a modem log out of win98 - that i got to dial out and connect to:
sai - tx9.rasserver ^M
login:^M
%login: timeout expired!^M
alarm
Failed
Exit [this is in my /var/log/messages]
at commandline I get [script failed] which is why i call it a script.
I have read the README, pppsetup.txtchapsecrets, mans other docs but I don't understand! What is the technical network process here? The connection between ppp and pppd? Of imddediate importance is what are these executable files supposed to look like? Are they scripts? Where do I find and or put them.
On my one machine i am both server and client. Kool, no more slave... but man its hard confusion being free ;)

i think i heard them try to say it was non-w3c compliant that they block.. yeah right.. i know they won't let any IM service through as i have tried connecting to MSN Messenger... won't connect at all.. not sure about their service though, wouldn't doubt it though. oh well.. i don't need microsoft anyways.. :D

MSN Isp and Linux

Just an aside right now msn isp latest msnia 5.6 upgrade software is so bugged that it rendered my connection useless and I can only connect mannually with my own dialup connection. Not even their technical support can work it out and some just try to push the webbased software on you. If I get a job think i will just pay the year that is left and drop their service.
