I think a lot of it comes down to the first distro you used as far as what you find to be the most user friendly. I started with RedHat 9, then FC1, FC2... then switched over to CentOS 4, and the RH based distros are still my favorite. It did take me a while to get used to the Ubuntu way after being so used to the Red Hat way, but that still didn't take me too long.

OK OK we get the idea. You don't like Ubuntu, so rather than all the negative comments how about saying what you would recommend.

I must spank my self too, I wrote only offtopic in my last post.

For easy using I would recommend any of the *buntus, centos/fedora.
For doing it the hard way, I would run Slackware or maybe SourceMage.

As for best MP3 player, I'm absolutely in love with KDEs Amarok. :)

Mint is also a good alternative, for beginners.

others that are found newbie friendly are Pardus, and PCLinuxOS

Based on many reviews and blog posts etc..

Thanks for the suggestions everyone... I think I will go with Fedora first and I found a store that is near me that sells cheep laptops for $100 to $350.

I'm going with the majority here...Ubuntu as a beginner's distro (or Kubuntu or Xubuntu...). I would definitely recommend that after about six months you revisit the decision and decide whether you want to stick or twist, but one of the *buntus is as good a place to start as any (ok, or maybe mepis or mint are equally good...)



No idea about the MP3 player, but install Acrobat reader, Okular and kpdf (evince? what about that?) and see which you like. I think Acrobat is marginally the best, but okular is fine too and it does more than just pdf files. I'd probably like kpdf better if it didn't insist on only opening one document at a time, which may or may not be a factor for you.
