newbie question
 

I have a newbie question. I am downloading the iso images for redhat 9 from their ftp site. I have a laptop with a wireless pcmcia network card (iblitzz BWP612). Iblitzz has a drive for redhat 8 on their website, am I to assume that the driver will work for redhat 8 and future releases?

You know what mipia, i've been noticing a growing trend. Most of the guru's and high posters are coming out with crap like that... I know he has a point. But the newbies are a different case. Did'nt you want direct assurance when you were a noob?? It's all well and good reading and believe me i've done a lot of searhing and reading, but in the beginning it's a big leap to take, and it's nice to know someone is there backing you up and putting your mind at rest. The noobs are the future, and if Linux is to carry on, we need them. I may be wrong, but i thought this was a technical help forum. Come on guru's and high posters, remember your roots.

I saw a post the other day, a noob had posted a decent question, but in caps, the responce :

"Stop shouting" That was it !! Ok warn the guy, but answer his freaking question.

Just my little rant for the mornign. But come on, surely you see my point.

okkiedokki, you should be fine with RH8 and a RH8 driver for you card. I can't really say for future release though.

Give it a shot, read through the doc's and install guides on the sites that you got the driver from. Most sites will offer some sort of documentation. If not, report back here with all the details and how far you got.

Well, unfortunatly I couldn't get rh to install last night. There was an error in the first disc. I know that the disc wasn't dirty, so I'll redownload the iso and burn it again. But thanks for the help.

I know it's no consolation but there are lots of hits on these forums about people trying to install from files they downloaded. I am not sure why there are these issues unless something is being stripped off or dropped. It was worth my time to go down and by my distro at office depot for around $20. I have never had an issue and if I had office depot would have replaced it. I know that it is free software but it was worth it for me. Just something to think about. Good luck and enjoy!!!

yeah, I'm going to let the download finish and see if it works. If not, I'll just go and get it from a store, but I'm a poor college student so a free software is what I'm shooting for.

okkie, do you have any special hardware? What do you mean specifically when you said it "failed"?

I agree, new users need direct reassurance. Not only that, but sending them straight to the search is often times of no help, either. If a new user has no clue what they're searching for, it's going to be difficult for them to find the answer they're searching for.

Well, my computer is old, which is one of the reasons that I am switching. I've been doing some reading over a couple of months and realized how much more linux can offer me then something like windows could. Because my computer is so old everything is being recognized by newer versions of linux like rh8 or 9, except for my wireless network card that I use to acess the universities network. I have a driver that iblitzz has given me, but they said it works on rh8 and my question really is, would it work on rh9 or would I have to do something special to it to make it install correctly?

The best methodology for fixing hardware compatibility issues seems to be quite simply, switching distros. Try fedora, or Mandrake, and 9 times out of 10 your hardware will be detected no problem.... just my experience and observation.

Also, if you go to www.redhat.com and search for RH9, they have a hardware compatibility list that may give you some insight. If nothing else, remove the wireless card, install, and then try to locate one that will work if it isn't on the compatibility list. Being a student, you might find someone who has one that will work and you could barter for a trade.

As an after thought, you might check with some of the computer types around campus and you might be able to borrow a copy from them. That way you wouldn't have to buy it!

well, I decided to switch to RH8 because iblitzz will only offer support for them. I looked around on the net and found better instructions to get the card installed and I got it to install. The network card's activity light blinks, but the link light gets nothing. There was an issue when I did the insmod -f method on the tar.gz file. It installed the wireless utility that will allow me to connect to my router but it didn't add a driver (or so I can't find it in the list) that my card goes to. I guess I'll just look around more for an answer.
