Newbie needs help setting up Virtual Machine
I'm having problems trying to setup a virtual machine and would greatly appreciate any help.
I am running opnSUSE 11.3 64bit on an ASUS G50VT-X5 laptop. (fresh install) I have a windows based program that I must run. I would rather not dual boot because I use that program constantly. I ran the Install Hypervisor and Tools and it created a Xen kernal. I can boot into that but if I try to create a new VM with either vista or xp it errors out saying that the processor in this system does not support full virtualization. So I tried installing VirtualBox but I get an install error saying that: There was an error in the repository initialization. Specified path '/tmp/YaST2-12251-5crsED/tmp_install_repo' is not a directory: file:/tmp/YaST2-12251-5crsED/tmp_install_repo I searched the VirtualBox forums but didn't see anything similar. I would appreciate any advice. If I can't get this figured out I will have to just load windows and skip using Linux. Thanks, Sprawl |
Before installing and running a VM, have you looked into using WINE to run the program? A VM should really be more of a last-resort, running it under WINE would be the ideal solution for something you want to run all the time.

Thanks for the quick response!
That sounds great to me. I will do some searching to figure out how to use wine. |
Just a thought with regard to the 'the processor in this system does not support full virtualization'. I believe if you are trying to install a 64-bit Virtual Machine your hardware needs to have 64-bit virtualisation, and therefore may explain that error message. If you are try a 32-bit version of Vista/XP.
Also with your other issue have you tried just creating that directory, you never know might convince it to work! |
