Newbie needs advice

Hi to all this is my first post, looking to start using linux more, for work and home and need some advice.

Can any one point me in the right direction for a newbie guide to linux, I want to understand how hardware is configured and a better understanding of the file system.

I have done a basic course through work so can get around and use basic commands.

I decided to DL a VTC redhat RHCT course and started to follow it and found that I did not have the required knowlegde base to follow it properly.

I found my self unable to mount img files from dvd rom because i could not find the device.

any suggestions please

Hi,

I'd recommend starting with a large distribution such as openSUSE, which also has very professional manuals online for free. For the latest 11.0 release, here:
http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse110/

Manuals of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) are online also, here:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/

Note that RHEL is not a free download, but a distro called CentOS is essentially a RHEL clone, which you can download, so all the manuals are valid:
