Newbie looking for help with sound card.
Hi all, I am a retired ex-military test pilot trying to keep up with technology. This PC I built has a Creative XFi sound card. I am familiar with the command line interface having started computing with Cobol, Fortran 40 Qbasic etc.

My main problem is installing the drivers for this card. I
have downloaded then to the desktop, gone in to terminal followed all the instructions on the various forums re-the XFi but still no sound.
What am I doing wrong. It is the only thing giving me problems. Love the speed and mostly all teh compatibility apart from this blasted sound card.

many thanks

welcome to LQ!

In terms of diagnostics: what does lsmod say, are the
relevant modules loaded? What is the status of alsamixer,
are the channels muted by any chance?

Which distribution of Linux are you running?

What happens if you run "alsaconf" from the command line? (either as root or with the "sudo alsaconf" command)

If you cannot use the sudo command, change to root user by writing "su" and input your root (admin user) password.
