Newbie Linux Wifi PCI card issues
 

Hi, all,

I'm brand new to Linux, but bring lots of old-style UNIX knowledge to the table.

I just obtained my first Linux-only server, with Fedora 6 installed & running.

First issue out of the box: the drivers for my Encore 802.11g wireless card will not compile. It's a Realtek chipset, and the drivers from the Prism54 project for rl818x (I'm doing this from memory, so some of the details may be wrong) get a slough of E-levels during the gcc compile step. I'm not up for debugging somebody's half-done C code, so...

Option 1) Anybody got the realtek 818x drivers to compile? Care to share your code?

Option 2) Download ndis wrapper, install Windows-based drivers. I remember doing this in the old days, and it's cheesy but works. I understand there are issues with buffer sizes that cause the driver to lock up from time to time. My instincts tell me "stay away," but I'm open to hearing user experiences. Does this work?

Option 3) Buy another 802.11g card thats supported in native mode. I've been googling like mad, but I'm finding drivers for chipsets, not for commercially-available cards. I've having the dickens of a time finding which cards have which chipsets. Can anyone recommend a card or cards with the following characteristics:

a) 802.11g compatible
b) PCI format for desktop bus
c) stable drivers for Linux, preferably in the Fedora 6 distribution

Any other advice not involving my head and surlier parts of my body are welcome.
