Newbie Kernel upgrade ? & up2date rpm hell

I am trying to upgrade the kernel of my RH 7.0 system.

Newbie ?: If I download the source and compile it, do I have to worry about all the conflicts/needs that the Kernel RPMs say they need?

I tried using up2date to update the kernel but the version (2.0 I think) is too old. And when I try to update it, I get tons of dependency problems which never end and sometimes the depenedencies would make it impossible to install a particular package.

Thanks in Advance.

Well it really depends on what the dependencies are. You will need a compiler, and ncurses (if menuconfig) and/or X (for xconfig). You'll need tar and bzip2 installed as well. Make, binutils.. basically really basic programs needed for compiling, if you've got them, you should be just fine. You can always give it a roll and see what happens

Cool

download or buy Red Hat 9.0
Your distrobution is so old there ain't much a point in using it.
Trust me, you'll like 9.0 so much better.
If you MUST!!! use 7.0 go to www.kernel.org and download the kernel
you wish to use. Don't try the RPM kernel upgrades for a distro. that old.
