Newbie just got a copy of red had 7.1

I have never used linux and want to install it and learn it. I have a server/ worksstation with a Pentuim II 266 mhz processor and with a 20 gig hard drive that is paritioned out to 5 different partitions. 1st, dos boot partition. 2nd, Windows 98 3rd, Windows 200 proffessional 4th & 5th are open and unformated. I also have a 2 gig harddrive with 2000 server on it. I have a generic video card with 8mbs ram. I have a 10/100 nic, generic sound card, with a 3.5 floppy, 52x cd-rom and a zip 100 drives. Monitor is a Accer 17". I have it set up to a simple switch and two other work stations. I have seen where the installation of red had has taken over the dos boot sector and has ruined monitors do to refresh rates. I thought Linux was get with legacy hardware! These things are what concern me about installing red had 7.1 on this machine. Any information about installing this product would be helpful. ANy do's or don't you may have would also be hepful. Thank MarkW.

During the install you will be given the option of loading LILO which is a Linux boot loader onto the MBR. You can choose to do this or you can choose to boot from floppy. If you are concerned about this, have it boot from floppy, which will save your MBR from any manipulation from Linux.

As to the monitor thing, just make sure you have your monitor specs handy, and you'll be fine. There is a rather large list of monitors to choose from, or you can enter a custom configuration if you have the right specs for your monitor.

Cheers.
