newbie installation assistance

I am in the process of installing the ati.2 drivers for linux for the ATI AIW tv in. I downloaded the tar.gz fine and I can only get so far when installing. The problem has something to do with my X11 directory, but I am not sure what to do to solve the problem. I tried doing a symlink to the directory where i thought the x11 stuff is (/etc/x11?) and it didnt work (but i may have done it wrong)

when doing the ./configure, it went fine for quite some time and then had this error:

... <lots of stuff> ...
checking for memset... (cached) yes
checking for strdup... (cached) yes
checking for strerror... (cached) yes
configure: creating ./config.status
config.status: creating Makefile
config.status: creating start_avview.no_install
config.status: creating config.h
config.status: config.h is unchanged
config.status: executing depfiles commands
configure: error: can not find X11

any ideas? thx
