Newbie GUI Problem
 

i am running mandrake 7.2 and i'm kind of new to it, but when i first started it and was able to view the gui window, but after i logged out, i can only see the shell prompt, how do i get back to the gui window from there?

also,
i have windows me and linux both on my drive on two different partitions and after in install linux it ran grub, which i had NO idea how to use and i couldn't even get back into windows to get a tutorial and my linux internet wasn't working either. my windows modem is on com3, but when i select that in linux, it always say's it's busy when i've never even opened it up. but, anyway, is there any free boot programs that are easy to use, b/c the rest of my family is pretty much computer illiterate and i want to make it as easy as possible for them. thanks.

1. startx --to get into gui

2. lilo --bootloader, easy to use and configure.

and the modem is probably a winmodem.. check out www.linmodems.org for details on getting winmodems to work in linux if they have any drivers for it of course.

He said he has a 3com modem so i dont think it is a winmodem.
I beleive that the symbolic link /dev/modem is pointing to the wrong port.
Try changing it and make sure that it points to the port your modem is connected to.
I might be wrong here tho...

I was about to say, are my eyes decieving me... Even if it was a 3com modem.. that doesn't make it automatically a non-winmodem as well.

I am using a 56K PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A which came pre-installed on a new Gateway computer. I went to the linmodems site, but have no clue exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe someone else can help me.

I have one hard drive split into different partitions and I'm running Mandrake 7.2 lnx4win on my E drive. If I download something for Unix of IE, how do I access it in Linux?

Look at the Manufacture and Part number on the major chips on your modem, then match it up with the chip types you find on linmodem.org.

The IE for Unix that you downloaded was for completely different hardware and OS, (It was for Sun, SGI or someone like that if I remember) It will never run on Linux on a x86. Microsoft likes it that way!

You have to use Netscape, Mozilla, Konquerqer, Nautilis, Opera, Galeon, Dillo, etc. instead.

I've never used Grub yet, (only lilo). Grub is probably easier than lilo, read the docs about booting other OS's on other partitions.

Actually most find lilo easier to configure and also there are more peeps that know more about it rather than grub. I vote, go with Lilo, you'll get more answers when you have questions regarding it.

I've used both, and prefer GRUB, just because it has a human-compatible user interface. :p
