Newbie Friendly Kernel Patching and Compilling?

I woudn't say that I'm a newbie at linux.
I would say, however, that I can sure do with newbie-level guides to stuff I don't seem to get the hang of...

I have been searching for quite a while for a decent how-to or tute on creating custom kernels, complete with patches.
I am most interested in the low latency patches available myself.

Does anyone know of, has written or had success with any such document?

If you want more than this Kernel Rebuild Guide post a little bit more specific.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "I am most interested in the low latency patches available myself."
