Newbie dialup Problem

This is my first post in this forum so hello :)
I am very new to linux and know pretty much nothing.
My experience so far is installing linux, finding out that I had a software modem, gettig a new modem, failing to connect to my isp.
I know i have a long road ahead but I could use a hand.
my modem seems to dial up ok and goes through initial handshake but disconects about 20 secs after that as if the login or password are incorrect which is not the case.
any pointers would be great.

welcome to the forum! first thing, you might want to use the search function up at the top of the page to see if you can find any related threads. there's been a few threads on dialing problems, but i don't think any come up on the first pages.

what program are you using to dial up? kppp or wvdial?

Hey there's nothing necessarily wrong with software modems, I'm using one at the moment, and it works perfectly, jsut needed to install a driver...

You'll presumably also need to specify a dns server to translate www.yourmamaandbillgates.com into '56.34.152.54' to make it useful. put the number of a good dns server (or ten) in the /etc/resolv.conf file. I use UK freeserve one 195.92.195.95, you'd want one near to where you live generally.

I've always found Xwindows dialers like kppp and rp3 to be really annoying and fussy, and would recommend wvdial anyday.

Thanks for getting back to me.Ive got a couple of server IPs for DNS both suplied by my ISP.
I entered them in linuxconf from shell/comand line and have not checked the file you refered to.
I have 2 os's. One where I can surf and talk to people and one where I am alone in a smokey room pulling my hair out.
I am using networkconf in x to activate ppp0.
I will look for the other threads you spoke of.
Different problem, When I try to run linuxconf in x I get brief disk activity then nothing.
I am considering ditching rh 5.2 and finding a more recent release,
(while I am still at the begining so to speak).
Any recomendations?

when i had a dial-up and i went to the newer kernels my connection started dyin like that, and i found out that i needed to update my ppp packages. but im not sure if that is your problem-ur using a diff distro

Hi there

If your getting a new linux distro dl Mandrake 8.0 it rocks.

On the subject of your kppp connection, go in and edit your account, and change the connection method from PAP to CHAP if its there. If not then the upgrade as mentioned earlier is a good idea
